I just returned from a trip to Australia, and it's interesting to me how different countries bring their own unique cultural context to online fundraising. There are also some important lessons to learn that we can import back into our North American fundraising mix.

Overall, Australians are quite similar to North Americans in their use of the Internet,…

Are you approaching social media with the attitude: "How do I configure this application to raise money for my organization?"

Do you believe that Twitter and Facebook are like email platforms or database software…Able to be deployed in the same ways for every organization, event or cause?

In his Internet Management for Nonprofits chapter "Social Networks: Getting Your Organization Working For Them!", Philip King challenges not-for-profits to change their core assumptions about digital fundraising.

What's possible when dynamic, mobile content can be leveraged to support non-profits? Forget about all the text versus 'everything else' cost differences, and think about practical use in perspective of past technology breakthroughs.

Some 20 years ago, email was seen as a toy that was limited by slow Internet connections, difficult to use and static. Fundraising events focused on traditional mailings and call centers for support. Roughly 10 years ago, connection speed increased, and the other…

When building an online program you have to worry about a lot of things - creating dynamic content; purchasing donation-processing software; developing landing pages; making friends with the Internet Service Providers; monitoring opens, clicks, bounce rates, and more. Who has time to think about building a list? But list-build you must, if you're ever going to scale your program, achieve significant fundraising goals, and win your…

We recently posed a question on LinkedIn, asking people if they have ever made a donation via text. For those who have first-hand experience with text-based giving, we wanted to know what their experiences were. A whopping five people responded (those of interest in this post):

Seems like this is a valuable tool for non-profits, right? It is, although day-to-day campaigns don't experience anywhere close to the generosity that these tragedies returned. There are a number of challenges to overcome.

The…

Over ten years ago when we first started out in the world of digital philanthropy, we noted how difficult it is for Canadian organizations to access specific information about the charitable sector. Most published metrics were American - where does Canada fit into the scene?

Things have definitely changed for the better, with far more information about the Canadian nonprofit community available thanks to groups like @imaginecanada , @charityvillage and so many others. However, in this excellent…

A shift is occurring with Canadian donations: they're moving online.

Ten years ago I was fortunate to be "donated" by my employer, A.T. Kearney, and join Anne Golden's team at United Way of Greater Toronto as their first-ever VP of eBusiness...and I haven't looked back since. In those heady days I thought we would replace all of the paper in the workplace campaigns in the matter of a few years!

As with most things Internet, it takes much longer than originally forecast. Today we estimate that…
